No more disco for Kiko. Instead, on SLAVE OF MY MIND, he goes darker and grimier, like with the hiss and thump of the title track. "Plaisir D'Ete" has a more tribal feel, while "Preludia" veers into melodic tech-house and "So Time" and "World End Rock Up" both delve into electro-pop. For the most part, Kiko stays instrumental, crafting long grooves best suited for the dancefloor, as with "Sunburn," "7 Minutes," and "PH-1." Solid techno.
A radical change from the Italo Disco inspired Filter-House of 2001's "Midnight Magic", Slave Of My Mind sees Kiko in much more dark territory. Still retaining a keen sense for melody, the music here is much more minimal but not to the extent that it's strictly for sweaty German night clubs at 2.30am.Indeed, the title track finds Kiko pretty much as we already know him, full of big rasping synths and gothic EBM vocals. The main difference between this and earlier material is a more intricate production, which conjures up similarities with James Holdens Border Community label (and in particular Nathan Fake's classic Outhouse).Plaisir D'Été is where the change really becomes evident. Minimal Techno but with enough individuality to distance itself from that scene in general, the sound of Grenoble is still firmly in place. It's not fair to mention The Hacker in with every other artist from Grenoble as, although all close friends, they each have their own sound but it IS a unique sound and Michel Amato's influence is definitely here. Then we come to Preludia, and it's a wonderfully melodic piece full of minor keys. I admit to having a soft spot for dark melody (in all styles of music) and this track has it in abundance. It's not really a dancefloor option but as I mentioned earlier that is one of the main reasons why this album works as a whole. The closest I can come to a similar track would be Agoria's Snake Hips.I won't go into every track in detail, but hopefully you get an idea now of what this album promises. Half dark melodic Techno, half driving dancefloor Tech-House (with some wonderful electronic short pieces that are by no means throw-away) Slave Of My Mind is a simply fantastic album. If we have to wait another seven years for the next Kiko album that's fine by me, if he puts as much care and attention into it as he has his first two albums.Highly recommended.
