At first glance it would not be unreasonable to dismiss this as a reissue of similary named discs of bootlegged to death material. You would be wrong to do so, however. Yes, the hndful of tracks that we have always referred to as the “:Blues Outtakes” are here and they are padded out with some even more common outtake, but the diamonds in the rough are the three previously unreleased tracks. “Born Under A Bad Sign” is a track from a Band of Gypsys Record Plant session 12/15/69. However, previous releases were edited. This version is without the edits, although lacking 11 seconds of the bass solo in the beginning. “Jam 292” (aka “Jelly 292”) is the fourth alternate version that has emerged from a Record Plant session dated 5/14/69. And this take of “Voodoo Child” is a more complete version of the original :Blues album track running 29 seconds longer at the end. This could have been an outstanding release as a single CD but the inclusion of so much filler material means that the joy of the unreleased tracks is diminished by their dilution. Nevertheless anyone who doesn’t have some of the previous releases would be pleasantly surprised by the material presented here. And just after the Italy-based Eat A Peach label offered up the Blues Outtakes 2CD set, the Japanese Typhoon label has already bootlegged it with a couple slightly different track titles and different cover.
